Dor was born in Israel in a a little town near Tel Aviv, and began his early piano lessons at the age of 6. He attended music schools and played with top groups around Israel until the age of 18. After his musical aspirations were curtailed by a stint as a commissioned officer in the Israeli submarine flotilla, he used the time spent under water as fuel for his future musical exploration.Following his highly decorated honorable discharge from the Navy, he formed Filthy McNasty, a Jazz quintet dedicated to the music of Horace Silver which performed in the best Israeli Jazz venues including Levontine 7, Shablul and The Zone, among others. He has performed with the Israeli Big Band at The Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Red Sea Jazz festivals, as well as Tel Aviv’s Einav Center for Culture. In 2013 he moved to New York after graduating with honors from the prestigious Israeli Conservatory to further pursue his career and education. His New York club appearances include Something Jazz Club, Ella Lounge, Zinc Bar and Cleopatra's needle among others. His trio was recently featured at the Rising Stars program as part of New York’s Hudson series. As a sought after sideman Heled backed up singer Yurie at the Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and played along side saxophonist Eli Vanunu at the Toronto Jewish Music Festival.

As Composer, his collaborations with The Kibutz Seminar Drama School resulted in the original score for Stars with Dawn, a play about the 1980 Russian Olympics. At the Israeli Indie Negev Festival, he performed and contributed his unique horn arrangements to one of Rolling Stones top 10 indie album artists Shy Nobleman. Dor is currently collaborating with several choreographers and dance groups, composing original music for dance pieces that will premiere at Peridance Capezio Dance Center and The Martha Graham School. Dor is also Musical Director at the Synagogue of Rye, leading a choir, composing and arranging sacred music.

Dor Heled is a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at New York’s New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and has graduated with academic honors. His teachers include legendary Jazz stars Andrew Cyrille, Charlie Persip and Adam Holtzman, among others, and has been personally mentored for over 2 years by multi Grammy nominee Sam Yahel (Norah Jones, Joshua Redman). Dor Is also the recipient of the prestigious Eubie Blake Foundation Scholarship for exceptional Pianists and The Hebrew Free Loan Society scholarship.

Dor is currently performing in and around New York City featuring new compositions with his original sextet project The Free Sounds and will perform in the U.S, Europe and Israel through summer of 2015.
